What is Zeolite?
 
Zeolite is an infill that absorbs urine and prevents odours from occurring, making it ideal for pet owners.
 
How does it work?
 
Zeolite has a molecular structure that is negatively charged. This then attracts the positively charged ammonium ion in urine so that they bind together. As it is bound together, this then prevents the ammonium ion from breaking down and turning into a gas, so you do not smell any unpleasant odour.
When it rains heavily, the positively charged sodium ion displaces the ammonium ion in the zeolite. The ammonium ion then flushes away in the rainwater deep down into the ground.
When dry the Zeolite returns back to normal to start the process again. In damp/light rain conditions it will not work as effectively.
 
Which grass is best for use with Zeolite?
 
Zeolite is recommended for longer grasses with pile heights over 30mm. As it is added to the top of the lawn, it can be visible in grasses with shorter pile heights. Installing Zeolite with longer pile heights has the benefit of also helping keep the blades upright for longer as well as preventing odours.
 
Safety
 
Is it safe for pets and children?
 
Using the infill prevents odours but does not sanitise the area. Cleaning is still recommended for grass used by both humans and animals.
